Major League Baseball has been developing a new blockchain-based video game that could rival Cryptokitties.
Memorabilia has been a big part of Major League Baseball for many decades. Baseball cards, uniforms, and more have been important for fans to not only build their own collections but to engage with the game.In the present day, MLB fans enjoy collecting items and players in the virtual world as well and now they’ll have the chance to do so through a crypto-based video game created through Ethereum‘s blockchain.
According to a report from Yahoo Finance, MLB digital collectibles are coming to Ethereum’s blockchain via Lucid Sight, a blockchain gaming company.
What is MLB Crypto Baseball?
The golden standard of blockchain-based gaming is Cryptokitties. Radarzero just reported an in-depth look at the game that lets users buy and trade kitties on Ethereum’s blockchain network. Major League Baseball is now looking to follow in its footsteps with “MLB Crypto Baseball.” The game will allow users to buy digital avatars tied to specific moments during recent baseball games.
Of course, users will also be able to sell their items, earn rewards, and stickers. The game will be released later this summer, but it’s been in development for a long time. Kenny Gersh, the executive VP of gaming and new business ventures for MLB, said the following about the move into cryptocurrency and blockchain gaming:
“We were already talking to Lucid Sight around the time that CryptoKitties first came out and then CryptoKitties sort of validated it a bit more. We talked a long time ago about bitcoin and whether we should accept it as payment for MLB.tv and some of our other products. We opted not to. At the end of the day, we decided that isn’t our business, we’re not in the speculation business. We’re in the business of delivering baseball to fans. So this game is a more interesting intersection of blockchain technology and what we do.”
What Does MLB Hope to Accomplish With “MLB Crypto Baseball?”
Attendance has been extremely low at MLB ballparks this season and MLB executives believe it’s due to a lack of involvement with a young and more tech-savvy demographic. The purpose of their involvement in crypto and blockchain-based gaming is to offer a younger audience a reason to come back to baseball in a new and interesting way. Gersh had the following to say about fan engagement and bringing baseball to crypto:
“That is 100% one of the strategic goals of this initiative,” Gersh says. “Collecting items related to your team, engaging with your team in a new way. For me, say the Red Sox win the division in a couple months, I want to buy something that symbolizes that. These will be event-based things—those moments in sports that happen that you want to remember and cherish, and have a sense that you were there, even if only digitally.”
