Dungeon Defenders 2 will soon become the first major game to offer blockchain rewards.
Developer Trendy Entertainment announced they are partnering with software and tech company Signal Zero to integrate blockchain rewards in Dungeon Defenders 2. The rewards will come in the form of Loot (a decentralized blockchain solution based on player skill), and will arrive sometime in Q1 of 2019.
The way Loot will work in Dungeon Defenders 2 centers around how the game records player performance via blockchain. This offers “proof of skill” data, and generates new tokens by comparing that data to other players’ performances. Addressing the new blockchain rewards, Signal Zero founder Tobias Batton stated:
“Our partnership with Trendy Entertainment means that Dungeon Defenders 2 will be the first major game released to allow game publishers and developers to share wealth with players without sacrificing any existing revenue generation.”
Dungeon Defenders 2 released back in June of 2017 to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms. It’s gone on to achieve major success, garnering almost 8 million downloads.
While Dungeon Defenders 2 is one of the first major games to utilize blockchain rewards, Trendy Entertainment isn’t the first to consider this type of blockchain integration. Earlier this year, Ubisoft noted they were exploring blockchain as a way to create unique digital items that “cannot be replicated by anyone and can be 100 percent owned by you.”
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how blockchain rewards are received in Dungeon Defenders 2, and whether or not other gaming companies such as Ubisoft implement blockchain rewards of their own in the near future.
