Build unparalleled augmented reality experiences for hundreds of millions of users on iOS, the biggest AR platform in the world.
At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) hosted by Apple, the company announced plans to incorporate augmented reality abilities into Apple’s native tool kit (ARKit 2.0) along with new support layers for iOS 12.
A new AR app called Measures was showcased. Measures functions as a digital tape measure, with the application giving users the ability to measure objects in a real-world environment.
Apple’s new AR development kit includes multiplayer support for AR games, has enhanced its persistent face tracking, and added an improved 3D model detection and rendering engine.
Persistent AR lets users save the location of AR content so they can resume interactions in the same place at a later time. For example, games can be resumed where the user left off, or creators can save and then continue working on content.
Shared AR apps are no longer limited to a single person or device participating in an AR experience. Now, multiple users can use their iOS device to simultaneously view AR experiences or play multiplayer games. Bystanders can even spectate AR games being played by multiple participants.
In another demonstration from Lego’s Martin Sanders, the executive showcased how the tool can “scan” a Lego and using the rendering engine bring it to life through the AR experience.
Finally, Apple and Pixar Studios also announced that they have created a new file format protocol, Universal Scene Description (USDZ), which enables the sharing of files across the iOS ecosystem.
